Frequently asked questions

Postnatal Class

Is the postnatal class only for breastfeeding parents?

Not at all! Yes, I am a breastfeeding support worker and a lot of my work is helping parents with their breastfeeding journey, whatever that looks like for them. However the antenatal class is not about breastfeeding, it is about settling into early parenthood, supporting parents with their own emotional wellbeing and connecting to their new baby. Each week there will be optional space to talk about infant feeding (and other topics) - whatever that looks like for you.

Is the postnatal class only for the birthing parent or primary care giver?

This class (and the Rebalance Studios) is a super safe space for mothers and birthing people, but of course men and secondary care givers with babies are welcome too.

Can I come for part of the six-week postnatal course?

To get the full benefit of the course, ideally you will be able to attend all six sessions. Payment is taken in advance for the full six weeks and if you miss a class due to illness etc, there is no partial refund available.

If you feel exhausted/ don’t feel like coming one week, I would encourage you to show up anyway - just as you are - because you will no doubt feel better for it. You are welcome to sleep on your mat for the full 90 mins while I watch your baby (I've been there and done that)!

If you know you will be going away for one or two weeks, it would be better to book a course running at a later date.

What if I have a crying/ unsettled baby?

You have my absolute love and kindness, I had one too so I can fully empathise.  I can also assure you the stage will pass. This is a safe and non-judgemental space and everyone is welcome to come as they are, including unsettled babies. I promise you, crying babies do not bother other parents one bit (we just don’t hear it in the same way you do because your body is biologically wired to respond to your baby's unique cry), in fact it is far more likely that others will simply be feeling compassion towards you and want to help.

I can certainly help you in the moment during class and mindful practices will be extremely helpful to all parents with crying/ unsettled babies. If not already, seek support from your midwife or health visitor in case there is anything underlying that needs further investigation.

There is only one part of the class where it might be helpful to others to take a very unsettled baby outside (and I mean fully screaming not just crying) and that is the ending relaxation, just so others can really focus.

Antenatal Class

Do both parents have to attend the antenatal classes?

Not at all! If there are two parents, I encourage both to attend where possible because whilst this class is teaching about breastfeeding, it is also about support for the birthing/ feeding parent which is extremely important and it is usual that that main support comes from the secondary parent or partner. However, that isn't always the case and you might feel better supported by a close relative or friend instead, or you might be a single parent (me too), or there might be a whole host of reasons why the non-birthing parent or partner cannot attend (work times/ working away/ illness etc). You are welcome to attend by yourself but I would encourage you to bring someone so they get to hear about the science and practices too so you have another person reminding you and supporting you once the baby arrives - this will be invaluable to you and baby.
